A 12V car battery stores enough energy to cause serious burns, eye damage from explosion, and electronic component failure. Portable jump starters are dramatically safer than traditional jumper cables — but misuse still carries risk. Understanding these 7 mistakes keeps you and your vehicle protected.

Mistake #1: Connecting Clamps in Reverse Polarity

What happens: Connecting RED to NEGATIVE and BLACK to POSITIVE creates a direct short circuit through the jump starter. On unprotected units, this can melt internal wiring, damage the car's ECU and sensors, and potentially cause the battery to explode.

The fix: Always RED → POSITIVE (+) first, BLACK → NEGATIVE (–) or ground second. POWNYM jump starters include automatic reverse-polarity detection — if you swap clamps, the unit beeps and refuses to deliver current. But never rely solely on technology; make the correct connection habitually.

Mistake #2: Leaving Clamps Connected After Starting

What happens: Once the engine is running, the alternator generates 13.8–14.4V. If the jump starter remains connected, this voltage feeds back into the unit, potentially overcharging its lithium cells and causing overheating or permanent damage.

The fix: Disconnect within 10–15 seconds after the engine starts. Remove BLACK clamp first, then RED.

Mistake #3: Jump Starting a Damaged Battery

What happens: A cracked, bulging, or leaking lead-acid battery can release hydrogen gas and sulfuric acid. Applying high current to a damaged cell increases the risk of explosion and acid spray.

The fix: Visually inspect before connecting. If the battery case is warped, leaking, or frozen (ice visible inside cells), call roadside assistance or replace the battery — do not jump start.

Mistake #4: Clamping onto Dirty or Corroded Terminals

What happens: Corrosion (white/green crust) on battery terminals creates high-resistance contact. The jump starter forces current through this resistance, generating heat at the terminal and reducing the current that reaches the starter motor — often resulting in a failed start attempt.

The fix: Brush terminals clean before connecting. If no brush is available, scrape the clamp's teeth against the terminal to break through light corrosion.

Mistake #5: Attempting to Start with a Low-Charge Jump Starter

What happens: Below 50% internal charge, lithium cells can't deliver rated peak amperage. You might hear a weak crank or just a click — and repeated failed attempts further drain the unit.

The fix: Connect the BLACK clamp to a clean, unpainted metal ground point on the engine block or chassis. This routes the current loop away from the battery's gas zone.

What happens: Some drivers try to keep the engine running with the jump starter connected, treating it as a substitute alternator/battery. This overloads the jump starter within minutes, causing overheating and potentially fire.

The fix: A jump starter is for starting only. Once the engine runs, disconnect immediately. If the engine dies when you disconnect, the alternator or battery is faulty — seek professional repair.
